Well, first of all you can only get player colors, not set them trough these conversion functions.
When you look at the Data Editor under Gameplay Data there is a field called "Player Colors+". You should toy around with that if you just want to switch/change colors.
If you're looking for a way to change the during the game.. I only know of tint color, but that would color the entire unit and not only the usual parts of it.
