Hi sorry if this is the wrong forum or whatever I wasn't completely sure where to place a question like this...but basically I'm considering buying sc2 and I was wondering just how populated the custom maps community is in general. I read that it was really bad off due to the popularity system driving lots of people away etc. and I really didn't enjoy the "normal" SC1 gameplay back when I played it I was always in UMS games constantly, I even made some of my own.
I was also wondering if HotS is going to be required for certain custom maps later on or if I can skip buying it if I don't care about the singleplayer campaign.
No, by all means this is the right section and forum. As far as hots and wol, yes you will be required to buy both in order to access it. Since your most likely using the starter addition it only displays like a half dozen out of the hundred or so real maps out there. Regardless of whether you want to play the singleplayer or not you need to full game anyways; you only get full access to everything like the mulitplayer, ladder, campaign, arcade, and that or you get nothing at all. Now there have been a number of custom mappers driven off by blizzards lack of ability although i know some are also waiting explicitly for hots and the marketplace. The community here has a lot of resources to teach you but you must also be a real self started ; but i would say at least from by perspective there a very small number of well hersed editors who tend to stick out.
In reality of you like the game any decent amount grab it. It know wol can be found for like $15 or less, and hots will be $60 which is very small give the amount of pure unlimited content you get and how long this game will last.
I guess it would depend on what kind of games you enjoy. There are lots of players for Sotis, Nexus wars, Squad TD (top10 popular maps)
And you can get games aranged pretty well with semi-popular games too with the open games.
But if its an unknown game, its pretty hard to get players...
I think Iv had my moneys worth playing custom games. I even think the open games system works pretty well, but you still cannot really get players for unpopular maps :/ (or it takes long time to wait). The community is pretty bad in my opinion, but I do greatly enjoy playing custom maps with other mapsters.
Hm yah I guess I'll just go ahead and buy it then, it's 60 bucks for both hots and wol together right now (some sort of sale in the blizzard store) so that's not bad especially since the game will probably just get better and better over time custom map-wise (took sc1 a long time to get a good selection of UMS games).
I loved probably 95% of the UMS maps I played in sc1 to be honest but my favorites were definitely volcano/cat and mouse type maps, I remember playing crystal wars for hours on end, but defence maps and such are pretty fun as well xD thanks for the replies guys I just wanted to make sure it wasn't like completely abandoned or anything because of the popularity system and such.
