I'm new here, hi SC2Mapster!
I've got a lot of melee maps in the works and I'd like to put them all up as projects on SC2Mapster, but frankly I don't want to upload the map file, except maybe a version locked by the editor.
Basically I'm paranoid. If I manage to create a quality melee map and someone grabs it, publishes it, and that version gets popular I will cry myself to sleep every night. As far as I can see, there is nothing to stop people from doing this--and the right internet savvy map thief could probably get away with it long before I come across the pirate version.
So am I a jerk for not wanting to upload unlocked versions of my maps on SC2Mapster? How do the custom game type mappers feel about uploading unlocked versions? From posts I saw on the official beta map development forums RainGame already had his map Overrun ganked.
So instead my plan is to create a project page on SC2Mapster with images and discussion only, and simply tell people what the map's published name is. Then they can connect to Battle.net and play a game on it. Does this just upset you and make you want to throw me out?
I'm not trying to be a jerk--but how do we protect our work?
If you're making some decent melee maps, and you don't want them stolen.. by all means! Please upload them as locked. The way I see it, I want it to be okay for me to upload locked maps, so I will say it's okay for you to do so.
Honestly, with melee maps there really isn't much discussion. I can't see how anyone would need to open it in the editor. The whole thing is there in the minimap picture.
I think it's a choice everyone has to make for himself and only himself. I know closed map doesn't help people to learn how to use the editor, but there will always be people who don't lock their map (I don't lock mine for example, even if I don't think anyone can learn from me xD) but frankly, make your choice only by thinking about yourself. If you are paranoid, then lock everything.
Of course here, you are talking about a melee map so nobody will mind, there is absolutely no problem, but if you come to create customs, you can lock as well if you really feel the need to.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but publishing a map as "Locked" just removes the triggers. Obviously, melee maps don't have triggers.
According to the Galaxy Editor, when you select to publish your map as locked it warns you that no one including yourself will be able to open the locked map after it is published. The warning recommends you save your locked map as a new file and make updates on a local, working copy.
@Eiviyn: I ignored how to lock a map, but even if it's how to do it, in a melee map there are trigger (or rather "there is") so I don't think it will be impossible.
