It seems there's no "popularity" anymore, and instead, it's displaying the map maker's nickname. WTF! No one cares about the nickname! They could show how many players are waiting inside the game, or how many hosts opened the map has, but only the name?!!?!? And how is the list sorted? Like the old Warcraft??
Someone has any idea how the new map publishing system will be?
That's still popularity though. There needs to be a new tab for "last hosted" and make that refreshable. As it stands right now, if you didn't publish your map on day 1 it will never be popular. The system is great for maps that are already popular... but trying to get a new map in the mix is impossible (atm).
Warcraft 3 maybe have been 9/10 DOTAs, but atleast that 10th game wasn't a DOTA. Right now (in sc2) it's 10/10 "DOTAs" and then new/fun/good maps on page 3 and onwards or not at all. Not to say DOTA is bad, just using it as an example.
They're working on something though which is good!
All they need to do is add the ability to see recently hosted maps, a search function, and tags for published maps so that you can search for maps by their names and tags and even genre with the search function.
It shows the last 2 published maps on the top. In this way, map creators can just keep deleting and publishing their maps until they become popular. Also, doing that they can publish and play right away. Youtube has done exactly the same this week. You can see now that the first video in a search has a label "new."
That's not a good system at all. That's why everyone complains. It also shows featured maps on top, not new. And mapmakers increasingly deleting and remaking just for popularity is plain horrible.
Actually that picture is showing "Featured" maps, which are simply the most popular maps. Those aren't the last 2 published maps, and I'm not really sure where you got that idea from. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but it wouldn't be a very extensive list, unless you can narrow your search.
Additionally, I think rating would be a bonus, as well as commenting if the publisher allows it at least.
At the very least, I think a search function is essential. Using YouTube as an example again, nobody would be able to find videos if they could not search and were only able to see popular videos, regardless if a couple recently uploaded videos were featured.
It would also be a very bad idea, as uploaders would need to "exploit" the system by deleting and re-uploading maps until they get popular.
And even then: small popularity won't be enough, so you have to keep deleting and uploading. By doing that, however, you can never accumulate popularity at all.
I don't know how on earth you can possibly call that a good idea when people need to spam to fix a broken system!
There was nothing wrong with WC3. It showed you all games that had people in them. This is what everyone wants: an unbiased list of all games with people in them.
You're old enough to decide yourself which you'll pick from the list. You don't need Blizzard to tell you 'here, this is the one everyone chooses; be a cool kid and do the same'. You don't need Blizzard to give you a huge list of maps with nobody in them: if you want to play a map with nobody active, you host it yourself.
I don't know about anyone else, but I abandoned both of my projects, one at 95% development no less. There is no way I can have Forlorn Hope (team offense/defense) up on launch day because it needs a lot of balance testing despite being feature complete, due to having asymmetric goals. The reason it wasn't tested already is because Blizzard screwed up publishing in the EU. If I can't have it up on launch day, it is pointless to put it up at all.
And The Old Ways (online RPG) idea died when I realised it would have very long game times, killing its popularity; the fact that games with one player aren't counted anymore was the death blow.

I can't give you any source, but there was a bluepost over at b.net forums where they said that they're aware of the current problems with map publishing (and others) and they're working on a solution that'll be most likely included in the zero-day patch.
That's about what they said.

Thanks for the collection of feedback and the constructive tone. Always appreciated.
We're fully aware of the concerns that are being discussed in the various threads, on fansites, detailed through kitten videos, etc. and we're in the midst of working on a comprehensive address that should hit most of the major concerns. Just a heads up.
But that wasn't the one I meant in the first place.
I've just watched the Batte.net Overview Video, and it shows a picture of the new Map Publishing System.

@RodrigoAlves:
That's the create game tab. It's always been like that.
Way to get my hopes up....
@Vexal: Go
Hmmm..... Anyone has any idea how they are plan to sort the maps?
IF THEY MAKE A POPULARITY SYSTEM LIKE THIS, IT WILL BE PERFECT FOR MAP MAKERS: http://www.starcraft-source.com/media/screenshot/view/?id=410

Kind of like YouTube I guess.
Guys, chat hasn't even been implemented...Sighz
We aren't going to see a good map publishing system for a long time.
Even if theres an option to show recently hosted maps, NO ONE would bother clicking on that. The best way is to do like in this picture: http://www.starcraft-source.com/media/screenshot/view/?id=410

Well I guess so then...
Or by default just show the last hosted maps, then 2ndary option is most popular :D

How do you know they are "working on something"? Do you have a source for that?

Right now this is the only post I can find:
