For everyone who has been struggling with Custom Variants and how they seem to error during the publishing process, I think I have the solution...
Try to keep the custom variants simple, and none of them can conflict with another attribute of the same variant. Also the player properties must match these attributes; ie. you can not have player one as RED in the Properties but listed as (none) for colour in the variant.... Use common sense to make sure no attributes conflict with themselves etc..
