Here is the goal: Create a game that can appeal to every type of 'custom game' player.
There are several different types of custom games people play. Alot of people play the same game several times in a day because they are fans of it. I have seen people play the same game up to 50-100 times in a row. I do not want responds as to what games are BAD or about games you dont/will not play.. tell me about the games you find awesome and play constantly. about how they are better than the rest and this is why you play the map.
A quote comes to mind "nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it"
Thank you.
The quote is plain bullshit. 1 does not equal 0 even if you set your mind to it, unless you're just delusional or insane.
Anyway, as for your goal, it's impossible to make a game appeal to everyone unless you kill a large chunk of the world's population. It's already extremely difficult to make a game appeal to the majority of people.
There is a concept called the "target market" that nearly all designers and salesmen use. Your game or product has a targeted demographic (the target market) that it will appeal the most to. You must design the game and its marketing around appealing to the target market to maximize sales within that demographic. All other attempts to appeal to other markets are secondary and, often, can actually hurt sales by alienating both demographics.
Polls like this can only ever give you the answer to the question: which demographic is larger? If you know which type of game is most-liked, you can cater to the largest demographic. It's a boring, but ultimately effective way of maximizing your game's chances at making money.

actually 1 can equal 0 if 1 s taken away from it, And undefined variable can always happen.
and his goal is not to appeal to EVERYONE... its to appeal to the vast majority. There is something about every game that is included in everygame, and the answer is simple, People like these games because they get a good playerbase, take mafia or Squad td, I know several pepole who hate it, but play it constantly only because their friends play it.
1 != 0. It's invalid to say 1 == 0 if 1-1 == 0. If you take away 1 from 1, it's no longer 1. Therefore, that stupid train of thought can't be used to say that 1 can equal 0.
The effect you mention is called "mob mentality" sometimes, but has many terms associated with it. It helps with getting more people to play the game but doesn't stand up on its own. And it's not quite as effective as you make it out to be.
Also, he said he wanted to appeal to all types of people. He didn't say what the types are, so I used the fact that everyone is their own type of person. Appealing to the majority of people in the world means that you need to appeal to 3,500,000,000 people. But, then you have to narrow down the age range. Your game probably won't be played by many 5 year olds nor will it be played by 70 year olds; cut it down to around 2,000,000,000 people. Now, cut it down to all the people who actually own a machine capable of running your game: 200,000,000 people, roughly. Already we're not even close to a majority of people in the world. Now cut it for people who don't play games, don't buy any new games, got offended by some random thing about your game, dropped it from the box art or title, can't buy it because of legal or international reasons, won't buy it because of rating, etc. This is before genre comes into play, and no matter what you do, a lot of people will not play your game on the sole reasoning that it is a genre they don't like, regardless of how good your game is or how appealing it is to everyone.

so what I am hearing is stop progression?, he never said everyone, therefore your entire logic is flawed, he said The Custom Gaming community, So Really his number starts much smaller already, Its People who play games, Who have good computers, Who Playstarcraft, who play custom games on starcraft. HIs number is much lower already its in the thousands. SO it is entirely plausible, My suggestion to him would be to go play All maps on the top 10 pages and talk to people to see what they like.
Oh also
Multiply both sides by a: a^2 = ab
Subtract b^2 from both sides a^b - b^2 = ab - b^2
Factor each side (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
Divide each side by "a-b" (a+b) = b
Since a=b, substitute a for b a+a = a
Add a+a 2a = a
Divide both sides by "a" 2 = 1
Subtract 1 from each side 1 = 0
Thus, 1 = 0 **
Edit: While I in no way agree with Any of TDHSST other post, I do agree on this one.
@Taintedwisp: Go
Divide each side by "a-b", you say?
if a == b, then that means you're dividing by a - a. Dividing by zero. You can't do that in this kind of function.
You didn't take into account the fact that people can buy StarCraft 2 for the purposes of playing custom maps. People have done that to play Mafia, after all. Also, you completely ignored "got offended by some random thing about your game, dropped it from the box art or title, won't buy it because of rating, etc." There are people out there who only ever like MOBA games like SotIS and will never be convinced to take seriously anything else. Same goes for TD players. Same goes for observer games like 1v1 Obs. You can't mix every genre to accomplish your goal, either, because it will alienate some of the players you're trying to grab just by having a mixed-genre title, plus such a convoluted mix is really hard to make into a good game in the first place.
Keep it going guys, Im getting my popcorn.
As for original poster
the power or ability to attract, interest, amuse, or stimulate the mind or emotions:
Thats the definition, it never once says anything about being perfect, so theres the whole someone will hate something about it, doesnt mean they wont play it, you should know that you have several people on the Battle.net forums talking about how they hate your map, but still play it. Appeal doesnt mean perfection.
also I already said Custom Gamers, So Your first statement that I missed, was Irrelevant.
Also a and B are undefined variables, So therefore once agian... Error message in your logic, A and B COULD = 0, but they could also equal 5 or 6 or 7 or 8. or anything really.
@Taintedwisp: Go
That definition has literally nothing to do with my argument. I didn't say ANYTHING about the game needing perfection; I was strictly talking about its ability to generate mass appeal.
@DarkRevenantX: Go
mass appeal, :P Then whats the problem, Squad TD has mass appeal. its hard to achieve, but it is possible none the less.
@Taintedwisp: Go
You'd be hard-pressed to prove that the majority of players regularly play Squad TD. I remember, before the update, counting up the hours played of the top few pages. Squad TD would be around 25k, while the rest of the maps combined would be around 70k.
My point is that "mass appeal" is arbitrary. You won't get the majority of players but you can get enough that you're still a dominant figure. There's no secret to making a game that appeals to the masses; it's just a matter of carefully adjusting your plans as you make/update your game to keep gaining support.
Squad TD is very, very good at appealing to the Tower Defense target market, which is already pretty large. That's all it is.
@DarkRevenantX:
i did not ask for "TARGET MARKET" or DEMOGRAPHICS or ANYTHING like that. all i asked was... what games do you like and play.. WTF! you go on and talk about this is a waste of time being its not what i even asked on my post. consider yourself a troll for not even talking about what the orginal post is... pathetic! all i asked was what games do you play and what makes them good. by your responce i guess NONE. or answer the qustion. stop being an @$$ and talking about BS.
@zenx1:•make TD or Survival/hero defence (they are always fun!)
@Taintedwisp:My suggestion to him would be to go play All maps on the top 10 pages and talk to people to see what they like.
Thank you for an ACTUAL responce to this thread...
@tdhsst: Go
yo, regardless, he was trying to help even if it failed, So show a little respect towards the mods of the site :P just because he couldnt help you here, doesnt mean taht he cant help you later, he is prob just irritated due to idiots on Battle.net trying to get his map banned because they are whiney crybabys.
@Taintedwisp:
i could care less what he is going through with his any other map. i asked a simple question. what games do you like? how hard is that....... instead he wanted to go on a tanget about BS... i dont care about all that crap,.. IF i got 100 responces with 100 different games GREAT! WOOHOO! i dont think its to hard of a question to ask.
and besides that, who is he to GUESS that a game that appeals to everyone is not possible...
@tdhsst: Go
Actually you did ask for it. Remember this "Create a game that can appeal to every type of 'custom game' player". As Dark as say its impossible to make a game the can appeal to every type of player. Its your own damn fault you mentioned something else and were unable to clarify. You want to know what game people like, well there this wonderful new battlenet system that shows open game that people like to play; sometimes if your lucky it even shows just how popular it is.
@Taintedwisp: Go
It funny how you mention how nearly all designers and salesmen use target markets, as I think blizzard is having huge issues with this; they want to appeal to new player or rather casual gaming noobs but want to remain/improve/convert the existing pro scene. Thats on top of trying to keep your reputation alive while using to it bring new players in.
@tdhsst: Go
Well dont say I didnt warn you.... lol
have fun... I wouldnt save too many assets to this site though with that Sort of attitude about things.
Oh I only backed you up because I wanted a good debate :P, dont think I dont like Darkrev for any reason lawl.
@Hobbidude Theres actually a simple solution Set the campaign and the Starcraft side to Pros. and leave the customs for the noobs, It works perfect that way.
@Taintedwisp: Go
Oh i quite agree i can be really easy to set it up for pros and noobs but i think blizzard is going about is very wrong. I even remember in several patchs and their notes that blizzard specially said they were going to take carriers out because no pros were using them, and then turned around the very next patch and burfed the hell out of it because where were wondering why no noobs were using it. Its thinkings like not having a 1s league for each race to help new players figure out what race they like to play as. By all means even if the ladder/single player was setup only for pros but had really helpful intrastructure that in a fun but slow way taught new people there would be no issue and would blow other games out of the water, but again blizzard is becoming a giant fail.

I dunno lately The Devs have really been helping out community.
@hobbidude:As Dark as say its impossible to make a game the can appeal to every type of player. Its your own damn fault you mentioned something else and were unable to clarify.
because this is not clear enough..... "tell me about the games you find awesome and play constantly. about how they are better than the rest and this is why you play the map."
how hard is it for a person to say what games they think are good? clearly for him its IMPOSSIBLE...
