Hey all,
I've gone through tons of ideas for the best way to present hero descriptions and stats to players for them to choose.
What does everyone think is the best out there?
This is also meant to be for a small selection of heroes, like 6-10
I'll just toss out some ideas...
1. Horizontally long buttons with a hero icon and the name. When pressed it will show data in a data area.
2. Larger buttons that show the icon as well as description. Possibly stats as well. If not, what about a button that switches text between stats and description?
3. Icons only. Basically press on the icon and data shows up elsewhere.
I've seen mostly icons only in most games, what does everyone think?
Well, I don't think, there is a "best" method. Some people like one way, some like another. Also depends on the map you play.
Usually, a fullscreen 3d presentation of the hero model would probably look the most polished, if you put some effort into it. However, especially in a fast-paced game, where you don't want to spend a lot of time in the hero selection or already need to know whats going on on the map, the icon-based way might be more practical.
Honestly though, you can make any of your suggestions look good and polished, if you use the right assets or, even better, can create your own assets (or have someone create them for you).
My best methos was usign SweetZombieJesus Hero Selection Library. It consist in a library which allows you to create and customizate your own hero selection (if you want I can give you the attached file if I find it). You can personalice how to be (in circle selection, portrait), how they appear (flashing the screen...), their descripctions. I mean, for me, it's the best method and it's really good from the aesthetically. Here's the link to SweetZombieJessus library: http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/libchs/
The download for that has gone bad, I've PM'd the mods but no response, if you find the file, would you mind sending it to me? I'd like to use it as it's exactly what I'd like to use.
