(DO Not Steal - But might.. MIGHT be looking for help)
RPG's are not an unknown genre.. But are the hardest maps to make due to the quantity of things within it, But, i had an idea for an RPG Map.
Everything's normal.. Quests, Heroes, Leveling, Exploration, Dungeons, Bosses and Hundreds of Items..
Then you throw in Hidden Quest lines, Random Bosses that may not even appear on that play, and random events within the map.
Your map then becomes Popular due to the amount of content and a good storyline and balanced gameplay.
As your map has been released, you work on an "Expansion" type thing. This is where my idea comes into fruition..
Usually expansions may need a whole new map because you are going into a new area and such, but why not do this...
You start playing your character who's a high level with some good items, you've been playing for about 30 minutes this session, and a message appears stating that a a strange portal has been sighted in (ZONE) as you go investigate with other players in the map, you see a camp outside a strange portal. As you talk to the officer, this boss comes out, and you must defeat it. Then the officer asks that you gather resources to aid in the invasion of this portal. (Think back to The Gates of Ahn'Quiraj in WoW)..
(If possible it would be great to load a map bank which is set to the server so multiple people across multiple plays can aid in the gathering and make the number quite high for the requirement)
When the amount is collected, a large force enters the portal, but then it creates a distortion. Every one in the force killed, and the people actually rips open, then the zone becomes filled with whatever was within the portal, your all driven back to the main city, and then Zones are slowly being taken over by the things from within the portal.
Brand new quest's appear at the city for you to slowly remove the portal fiends and take back the zones. once you get back to the portal, you must enter it and take whatever is controlling these things (Which cannot be done until you are quite high leveled and have enough people to take out the fully-scripted bosses)
Once the portal has been closed and destroyed, the world turns back to its former self and all the original stuff returns..
Its a good idea. You could start with the largest map size, and if you don't plan to use the entire map form start (which I actually doubt for a RPG) you can use empty areas for your "expansion".
I was also thinking of maybe a single dungeon layout, but it changes for each dungeon. So, same dungeon, different enemies.. i know it sounds a bit boring, but it would save a heap of space on the map.. and you could add more dungeons and items drops and such..
this is an easy idea to implement to an already existing RPG .
turn a SUN ( that you made ) turns into a ECLIPSE (easy to do ) or something... then all units on map change ( kill old units via triggers add new units via triggers) .
new quest appear . special bosses come out , new units , special Items ... ect.....
If you have a map that is taking ALL the space ( like my rpg ) .. i have 4 acts .. i could implement a major change like that in each acts ... x4 ... so basically x4 the leght of the map
went from 1hour of game play to 4hours...
its a good idea... but not really unique... i was actually planing on adding something like that to my map once i was done the 4 acts.
i wont steal your portal idea :) but word to the wise..... if you plan on doing it your self and you dotn want people to steal your idea... why post it?
To see if its even worth trying it... If it doesn't sound good, i wont make.. If you spend 2 years making something and no one likes it, what was the point?.. So i'm just seeing what people think abut it before i decide anything.
Well, you know, almost any idea is good if you're willing to spend time and effort on it. Idea is less than 5% of work anyway. And what you have is just a "quest" idea, that isn't really worth anything until you create a solid foundation.

You see, if you make a crappy RPG, then an expansion with your idea will also be crappy, because it's based on quality of map/systems itself. And creating what you have listed here would probably take a year or few, that is if you don't give up after 3-4 months and move on to something different. So yeah, idea is just an idea, without a work it's just a random image which will never come to life.
But then again, you don't really need extreme complexity, unlimited amount of items, bazzilion spells and randomly generated quests to make a good SC2 RPG. Keep it simple, yet fun and enjoyable, and you might actually finish and RPG project to which you might apply that idea of yours. Anyway best of luck, if you have spare time and want to make an RPG, do so.
