I was wondering what other map editors people have used. Most people probably used the StarCraft1 map editor. I never used the WarCraft3 editor much, but I imagine a lot of people on here have.
Most of my time spent making other maps and games has been in the Hammer and WorldCraft Editors for Half-Life 1 and 2. I love making buildings, rocks, and everything with brushes in those editors. I made a lot of Deathmatch levels for HL1. I made a single player mod for HL2 and a lot of maps for art classes that tell stories like plays with things happening around you. Also some Counter-Strike maps for both released versions of the game.
I have spent a lot of time with the StarCraft1 editor, but nothing compared to HL. Made one especially complicated map with tons of triggers and multiple players.
Also I have messed with the Fallout 3 and Skyrim editors, but I am not good with those at all.
I really wish there was a good map editor for Grand Theft Auto 4.
What editors have you used? How good are you with them? What did you make for other games?
I used wc3 editor. I would say my skill level was about equal to my sc2 skills. In wc3 while there were limitations, there was always tons of workarounds.
in wc3 I did some weird dota maps and diablo styled dungeon adventure and lots of unfinished projects. I used to do spells with crazy effects and I still do the same...wc3 also had so many awesome assets. Perfects Ice/lightning/fire/poison etc...stuff....mmm...
I have keen memories about HoMM3 editor as well Disciples1 & 2 editors (I just love those games). Though most time spent goes to SC1 StarEdit and SCMDraft. Got pretty good though never bothered to learn EUDs. So many good memories, so many unfinished/half-done maps.
Then there was WC3, I didn't have internet back then and only had a pirated version, so I didn't get to experience wonderful custom scene it offered. Made one hero arena for myself and went back to SC1. Kept playing with it till SC2 came out. My only released map is in SC2, hoping there will be at least one more :D
When I was 5-8 years old I spent a good amount of time with the Warcraft 2 and the Duke Nukem 3D Editor. Was a ton of fun placing enemies and inventing stories about them and stuff. :D
Didn't do anything after that because it got boring and I didn't feel like I had enough background knowledge about math, programming etc. to get into the actually interesting stuff with the War3 and SC1 Editor. Also interests shifted over time as I got older obviously.
I've used the StarEdit SC1 editor, the Warcraft 3 World Editor (was that its name? been some time) and the Warcraft 2 editor. My knowledge in all of these is basically the same - I find making nice terrains fairly easy to do, and I know enough about triggers in order to know my way around and make a basic campaign-style map. There may have been some more stuff (I made a rules.ini mod for C&C: Tiberium Sun at one point, for example), but I can't remember any of that well enough for it to be relevant.
I've touched the WC3 and SC1 editors and also found an editor for some old Star Wars game- Galactic Battlegrounds? I think that's the one. I never really put any effort or had any interest in actually learning to do things with them though. If you can imagine a ten-year old placing 1200 things on the map and watching them kill each other, then wonder why the game lagged too much, then you would have had me.
I have developed an interest in learning since then, though. The SC2 editor is the first one I've taken seriously, and attempted to learn to build custom units, some working complex triggers, and having the ability to balance a game and have fun with it at the same time. I mainly don't have any good maps on SC2 because I don't dedicate the time to make one, although if I did, I could make some pretty decent games to play. Most everything I make as of now is either an unfinished/abandoned project, or an experiement.
I do actively contribute to developing Island Defense 2, though.
