I am just wondering one thing. why do 99% of the arcade games have an AI that is almost completely dumb. See i am pretty sure that in a normal game (melee) that there is quite a bit of Micro'ing your units around. But in the arcade computer its non-existant. I am creating a game where atleast the AI is pretty dam good. not this "A-Move" crap like the others have. Example: Hellions have 5 range and are fast. so why would they STAND there and die from zealots.. WHAT? got to be kidding me...
I know that for Desert Strike HotS I prefer a reliable AI that will behave the same way each time. Could I make units fire from max range? Sure. Would it make the game better? No, not really.
Unless a smarter AI improves the game experience significantly (like it obviously does in melee co-op vs AI), there's no reason to do that extra work. As Tya notes, improved AI for Desert Strike, a player versus player oriented game type, would be pointless as it wouldn't improve the game experience.
It might not be much, but if you set the enemy player difficulty to Brutal via triggers, it will act a bit more intelligently, microing away units when they're low in health as well as avoiding storms and stuff.
But a smarter AI would make the game MORE reliable. I would say the only UNreliable Ai is the one that does not know what its doing. A-Move into a psi storm is not very good, imo. A unit with 5 range running in and attacking at 3 range is UNreliable. Smarter AI gives you more Consistency in what they do.

a lot of extra work for little to no reward.
Depends what kind of map you're talking about.
