Hey, I am starting work on a 3 dimensional space fighter map with 360* mouse control on all axis, but I have not played many "good" space fighter games recently and while I am attempting to find any old ones I have still to install I wanted to get a good consensus on the controls for any space games you have all played before that you liked. What I mean by controls, is changing your pitch and yaw is obviously dependent on your mouse and how fast your going, but what is most preferred for increased/decreasing speed, targeting, etc (such as did WASD have any use at all and such). My goal is to create controls to fly a ship in first person view as smoothly as possible not on a coding aspect, but controls and interface.
hm thats true, but most have mouse as a basis for those without a joystick. cant really use a joystick in sc2 as far as i know lol, so i have to make due with what i can and attempt to make it as easy and friendly to use as possible. ill check out wing commander controls, thanks!
basically, its hard to make a FPS due to the arrow key lag, but mouse lag isnt near as bad so i figured a space shooter would be a good alternative even if theres no joystick.
I disagree with the idea that there are no good space fighter/simulator games which use WASD. My personal favorite X3 uses the controls and they always seemed quite natural to me. I might note it also supports joystick although I don't use one.
from what its looking like sofar what i have thought about is...
- mouse rotates screen/ship dependent on speed/maneuverability
- mouse click 'left/right' for firing, as well as spacebar
- '+' and '-' keys direct speed (OR) 'W' and 'S' keys direct speed
- 'Q' and 'E' keys for rolling ship
- various other noted keys such as matching target speed, max speed, stop ship etc (not sure about these... maybe tab for targeting, ~ for match target speed, 'backspace' for full stop?)
- all four arrow keys or possibly F1-4 for viewing each direction in your ship around you.
I am sure I am missing quite a bit, this is just what comes to mind at the moment and what I have seen many games use similarly. But I kind of want a control scheme that isn't confusing and has everything in easy to remember places or keys that are all near each other.
By all means check out my mod Cosmic Eclipse! It has a ton of the systems you want to implement, although i use spacebar for "boosting" depending on which direction you're moving or strafing as well as multiple weapon types (1-3) selects weapons
It even has custom art assets and animations that almost no SC2 mod has (which you are free to take and use for whatever)
Take it apart and take whatever you want from it, or steal the whole thing and build on it, i honestly have almost no interest of going back to it at this point and i would love to see it make some kind of impact on the custom games community.
Edit: I know it's a bit advanced, but if you have any questions i can help with just about everything outside of the UI, my buddy handeled that part of the mod.
do you know starwing or starfox or lylat wars (i´m not quite sure what the name is , there are 3 games for the 3 platforms) for SNES, N64, and Gamecube?
this is a nice game, i was thinking this would be nice if someone creates that for sc2. i doubt that you can have endless 3 dimensions in sc2. but this game is like lost viking (sc2 campaign) in 3D. so you can move up, down, left right until you touch the border of the screen. fly around and have to shoot everything that moves :)
man i loved that game...

Wing Commander series.
Descent Series.
X-Wing / Tie Fighter.
No one uses WASD or mouse for these games. You use joystick. Flight simulator (both air and space) games designed for use with the mouse are awful.
