The problem with the user-made game "Left 2 Die" using Blizzard's map name is nothing compared to this. Valve just applied for a trademark registration for DOTA. So, Blizzard might not be allowed to call their map "Blizzard Dota."
Quote:
"To us, that means that you're really taking it away from the Blizzard and Warcraft III community and that just doesn't seem the right thing to do," said Pardo, Blizzard's executive vice president of game design.
Though I have to say, since the term has been in common circulation for so long, it probably could be disputed. I mean, I'm no lawyer.... but it DOES sound like the lawyers for two major companies are about to have field days!
Pretty sure I've read somewhere that Valve only managed to trademark DOTA (with Capital letters), and not the more commonly used DotA, most likely because of how widespread the latter acronym is.
That might not matter. Things similar to trademarked objects can also be fought in court.
There are several occurances where brand logos or slogans were prohibited just because they were "similar enough".
A good example:
The "Jack Wolfskin" company managed to ban the paw on things like this innocent cute little pink pillow by court order.
Same way DOTA and DotA will probably not make a difference, especially if Blizzard DotA resembles the trademarked DOTA so much.
Could these companies stop fucking around and accually come up with games that isn't halfbread and fucked up around each corner, instead of spending their resources on such things?
Yeah, I know it probably won't make too much of a difference, just figured I should mention it, since Valve apparently failed to trademark the usual spelling of DotA :)
I don't know about you guys but I have the strong impression that Blizzard DotA's appereance at Blizzcon and the decision to make that custom map by official developers is linked to the recent announcement of a Valve DOTA2. I think of it as a way for Blizzard to control the concept and rights, and to not loose the DOTA copyrights as this news is demonstrating.

Blizzard shouldn't name their map Blizzard DOTA in the first place. Blizzard doesn't have any of the original creators of DOTA so it just doesn't seem right to take the name of a game that other people worked on.
They should rename their map Blizzard AOS, Blizzard MOBA or Blizzad All-Stars instead.
Aparently you haven't read the editor Text that appears every time when you start the WC3 Editor. Every map made by it is owned by Blizzard and so is its name.

This is true. Therefore, WC3 DoTA is technically owned by Blizzard. That said, I do hope Blizzard wins if there's a lawsuit.
that assumes dota was actually made with the standard editor, which i believe it wasnt .. its more like jassnewgen pac it was made on, since alot of the stuff in dota wont compile on the standard war3 buggy crap editor. Users had to step in to make the editor better. So that is a argument one can make also..
anyway i think blizzard is at wrong here. They should rename thier map, not the other way-around
Ice-Frog is the reason for dota's success. makes no sense talking about "what ifs" if there was no ice-frog, the dota map would not be a competive one, just a good custom game, But its competitive due to Ice-frog on why it took off as competitive custom mod. , This is not something blizzard guys can do, cause theres no price you can put on natural Talent.
since ice-frog is the main man, and hes working with valve now .. He deserves to have his map name trademarked for later use.

JassNewGen is an addition to the normal editor, which only acts as a compiler and interface. It's still the normal editor. The only reason it doesn't save correctly is because JNG reinterpretes the vJass Script and turns it into Jass syntax.
Also, I think that JNG is, strictly speaking, illegal. It operates the same way a maphack or a virus does.
Valve: We want to trademark DOTA because DOTA's creator works for us.
Blizzard: No. We are the DOTA creator because we own all custom-maps. We're the one who will trademark DOTA!
IceFrog: Can we decide the winner on a DOTA match?
That'd be perfect. LOL. Blizzard vs. Valve on DoTA. XD
Edit: I just had a thought, do you guys think this will sink WC3 DotA? If so, what will happen to WC3?

If that were the case than debuggers, operating systems, antivirus programs, and Blizzard's Warden would also be illegal. That's not how the law works.

Whats your point? I don't think capitalization matters.

Ahahahahahah! That's just gold :D

I was under the impression they were naming it Blizzard All-Stars.

These two companies are going on war....

Ok, then I'll need to rename the DotA map I'm currently making to something else..... Maybe DotN Defense of the Nexus?
j/k, I'm probably going to give it a more creative name.
