I've heard some pine for the days of the WC3 custom map scene, one which was apparently much more vibrant than our current SCII scene(I don't know - I never played WC3).
My question is, how was the scene at this point in the game's lifespan(i.e. about 1 year after release.)
Was it already better, or was it similarly underdeveloped?
Preety similar. They discussed this in the latest MapCraft. It started off with lots of Tower Defense maps, and slowly evolved. We're about on track. What people don't realize is that the popular DOTA map didn't even get going until much later in the game's life. Yes, there were dota maps before. Like sotis; imbalanced, kind of fun, but not perfect.

Zelda's mention was pretty much spot on. It seemed like it was a lot more booming now because there were a lot more maps up, but the truth is that in the end it was a relative milestone in mapping as a whole - stuff that now seems dime a dozen (Marine arena, hero battles, CTF with heroes, TD's) were all pretty much invented or reshaped during the War3 era. While Defense of the Ancients *was* the first proper map in its kind, there were AoS maps going around before that. All the Warcraft 3 ones were pretty boring (and aside from improving on the concept, DOTA also improved all their errors and added polish), but I do know for a fact that even the online SC1 community had TD's and AoS's.
Oh and Vexal; I keep having this feeling that if you get a bit less involved and fussed with your maps, and you can do absurdly great things. I'm fairly sure of that.

What specifically were you referring to? My previous map was on the first page long enough to satisfy me. It wasn't a very in-depth project, however.
I feel my next project is suitably deep. It's a lot of work to make these spells, and make the rounds unique and the gameplay fun and balanced. I'm putting a lot of work into the feel of the game, and testing it with a full run-through each time I add a single change, ability, item, hero, or level.
Similar question. How was the mapping community (epicwar/hiveworkshop) evolved at this point in wc3 ? Are we having better chance to collaborate and share resources than before ?

Were there or were there not hundreds of different maps and more than 5 different map types to play from? In sc2 after a year, you can only play a couple different map types and only about 20 maps to choose from. War 3 CANNOT be that bad?
What happened to all the defense maps? I love defense maps and when sc2 launched, i only got to played 2 (art of defense, platform defense). You cannot play any defense maps now at all. In sc1, I must have played dozens of different defense maps within a single month! What happened to all the rpg maps? The only one I ever played was Death Haven, were there or were there not tons of different RPGs in war3? People are lying their teeth off if they are saying sc2 custom map community is as vibrant as war3 at this point.

Theres only about 12 good wc3 maps I can even stand to play
SC2 mapster has more info on it about sc2 then worldedit or hivework shop have today for Wc3 granted they may have more posts on thier forums but I can find out alot more here on sc2mapster about sc2 then i can on those sites right now about wc3.....
All you people whining I think arnt really old enough to have been on a computer when sc1 came out and if you were then jesus crist let your nuts drop and quit whining like a bunch of little bitches.....

I have no idea but i saw a video of island troll tribes and it had a really clumsy crafting system while SOTIS has similar mechanics but better.
If anyone cares, my new hero survival map will be coming soon.
It's going to be really awesome. It has lots of good things about it such as everything about it.

If I remember correctly, the only decent custom maps came some time after The Frozen Throne expansion.
