Are unions available in galaxy? If so, is the byte representation of data still system dependent?
well, it's very likely they aren't implemented. Mainly because you could extract pointers and modify pointers with them. Blizzard is trying its best to avoid illegal type-casting.

Unions in generally aren't a good idea, unless you really need to.
Granted, with the limited memory at our disposal it seems like a nice solution, but in the end it'll probably just cause troubles.
Apart from that there aren't any unions in Galaxy.
