Im thinking about making a diablo style map. But I have never played diablo so I am not sure how it handles abilties and things. I know there are tons of them, so I am not sure what the hotkeys and things should be. What I have so far:
Left Click- Move
Right Click- Swing Weapon/Shoot gun
Thats it. I could free up the left mouse button if I did WASD but I dont really want WASD cuz of the lag....I was thinking about maybe having mouse wheel cycle your abilities and then use right mouse to use it, but then you would have to cycle to "attack" just to use your weapon, and that takes too much time in a fighting game. Clicking the Middle Mouse button is also not desirable because its kind of awkward on some mouse-es (mice?) Anybody have advice?

Ahh Thats much better. So left mouse is your alternate ability/move. Im not sure if I can figure out how to do that tho.. =[ I will try! But what about abilties that dont need a target? Then you would have to put them on the right key because you wouldnt be able to target....Maybe a doubble click or hold space and click or something?
Go get the Torchlight demo. That is Diablo with its soul ripped out but its definitely the exactly same style of engine with some modernizations, hell even the sound track is the same tunes.
IDEA! I implemented WADS but I can easily remove it. Does this sound good to anybody:
left mouse- move
right mouse- ability(you can put any ability here)
shift/control + right mouse- secondary ability (again, put your usefull but less freqently used ability here)
?

play diablo 2. period. Every question you've asked would be answered by simply playing diablo 2. left click = move and abilities and you answered your own question already. But what about abilties that dont need a target? well you dont allow those to be hotkeyed to left click. solved. thats exactly how diablo 2 handled it. WSAD will not feel right with a diablo clone anyways. Plus you can always add a hotkeybar like WOW i guess to easily access more spells. Diablo 1 and 2 had a belt you could equip that provided you with SLOTS that were hotkeyed to 1-4. You could only put potions and a very small portion of usuable items (not really any attacks) to those hotkeys. but thats not really what makes it diablo 2. the items are what makes it daiblo 2. Random Random Random. almost all starts are randomly rolled creating items so rare that some may still have never been found to this day.
DIABLO 3 SPOILERS SORTA
Diablo 3 has added the ability to put spells on your belt pretty much. and made the belt larger 1-8 or 1-0 i dont know exactly. more like wows action bar.
Well ok. Except, I do not own or know anybody who DOES own diablo. And I am not gunna buy it. But yeah, I checked out the diablo 3 site, it looks very, very cool. Cant wait till its out. I know what controlls I will use if I keep WASD. But remember, this is not a diablo clone, but I think diablo is a great game for its genera so I think its a good game to get some info from. If I trash WASD then I will have right click be attack and hitting shift / controll are your your secondary/third abilities

Maybe you should check out Diablo or the sequel before starting. It would probably give you a lot of good ideas.

I suggest you start smaller.
Try just making stuff to demo your thoughts

What is torchlight? Sc2 map, wc3 map, stand alone... etc? Edit- never mind I found it.
I see what you means, its similar to diablo. But the demo is just a 2 hr trial...If you own it, would you mind telling me how it works?
