Lets say I wanted to prevent EMP from effecting an immortal. I know how to exclude types of units (massive etc), but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to exclude just the immortal.
The inverse of that is I want to create a second search area that sees only the immortal and applys a -20 shields, instead of the -100.
There is a Unit Type validator that you can put in the effects after the Search Area effect. An alternative would be to adjust the Search - Search Filters to exclude units with those attributes.

I have the search area effect open. There is no "Unit Type Validator" field. What field do I alter? You've got to be thorough with me, remember, I suck at this. ^_^
There isn't a field for that. There's just one for "Validators". You need to use the dropdown menu at the top to go to the "Validators" tab. Once there, you can create a new Validator of "Unit Type". You can then plug your Unit Type validator into the Validators field on the search effect. It helps if you look at the Validators which are already in that list as they'll give you a good point of reference.
It's a hard concept to wrap your head around, but once you grasp it it's extremely powerful.

The Search - Exclude - Effect field? That doesn't seem right.
That can be used to make the targets of other Search Area effects and Create Persistent effects are excluded.
