Is there a purpose to this? It doesn't change anything when you exclude/allow/include dead units into your target or search filters. I was trying to make a ressurection type deal with a search effect with the search filters set to "Dead - Required" but nothing happened. Does anyone know what this field is even here for or have they seen it used in any actual starcraft units?
Edit: Actually it did partially work. It did find some dead units, not all of them though. I wonder if a "dead unit" only exists for like 1 second?
Most units have a Stats: Death Time of 0.0 which means they die and they are gone. If you want some units to stay around even when dead, so that they can be found with a search filter "dead", set a duration > 0.0. You can also set a duration of -1.0 which means the units will never expire after they die (not recommended if you don't clean up and new units are created).
I used it for an autocast spell, so even though most units vanish very fast the caster unit can cast the spell by itself more often then a player would be able to. I don't know if it would be a good idea to change all death times in the game just because you have this one spell that targets dead units, but it surely solves the problem.
Instead of opening a new thread I'll just ask this related question here:
I can't get my weapon to target dead units. The effect is a create unit effect which replicates the target unit. So I got the weapon to work using a roundabout way:
Weapon (targets live units) -> Search effect about caster (dead only, max 1 unit) -> create unit effect. This works pretty well.
But then when I try to cut out the middle man and just do Weapon (dead targets only) -> create unit effect it never fires as if it finds no dead units at all. Anyone know why this might be?
Edit: I think it might just be the nature of weapons, legacy at least, to attack targets until they die, thus if nothing is alive, there would be nothing to attack.
It's all a bit weird to have a weapon targeting dead units in any case... I'm not sure what's the big picture here, but I would probably rather try an ability with autocast on dead targets.

Yeah looking back this seems like the strangest thing ever but the reason I made it a weapon is because I wanted it to be faster when buffed with increased attack speed BUT I have found a work-around to do that and be able to use an ability instead of a weapon. Thanks

Depends on the Death Time which can be configured in the unit data. Usually, this is set to 0, so units will disappear immediately.

@SoulFilcher: Go
Thank you all. That knowledge is very helpful.

Your weapon's target filters allow dead targets?

I used filters for dead stuff for my autoharvester, have a look at that.
