Whats the maximum amount abilities that can be added to a units command card?
for example, if i have a map, that whenever you pick up an item, you get an unique ability,
and theres 100 different items with 100 different abilities
you cant add abilites through triggers right? so have to pre place the abilities onto the command card and then have the picked up items show/hide the abilites right?
well, how many abilities can fit on a hero units command card?
or is there another way to add an ability to a hero unit, when they pick up an item, that allows for 100+ etc items?
You can add abilities via triggers, which obviously makes the answer infinite.
However you can also hide abilities behind other abilities in the command card. This retains their hotkey but their icon/cooldown will not be displayed.

Are you talking about catalog functions, because aside from modifying the catalog you cannot add an ability or modify the command card at runtime. I'd be interested to know if you've tested using catalog functions to modify the command card, though.
Since there's four menus in a command card, then it's (5*3)*4-3 (the abilities that link to the other submenus) = 57 abilities, assuming you remove attack/move/stop/etc..
However you can hide abilities like Eiviyn said, and make them hotkey-enabled or simply passive.
Erm would having two command card slots dedicated to an ability that adds/removes a hidden buff that rolls through the abilities in each slot work?
What I mean is each Ability that is added has a requirement to show the button only if the unit has the right selection number stack so that way you could have several abilities stacked on the same slot.

@RileyStarcraft: Go
I think he mean add all the abilities then disable enable them on the fly. Still the maximum to be added is 32
Indeed. I didn't realise there was a hard cap of 32. Are you sure you can't use parent functions to create 32 entries of 32? 32*32=1024?
You can regulate screen space using the show/hide ability trigger, though for some ungodly reason there is a pretty irritating delay on this.
Depends on what you want.
